| The story "New mentality needed to combat AIDS" is truly a universal challenge faced by the contempoary Seventh Day Adventist church. My name is Alma T. Knight I am a Regitered Nurse in Miami, Florida with 34 years experience in the healthcare industry in acute care facilities, and I am the director of mobile health services for my company Paramount Community Health Team, Inc. in Miami.
Our target population include the unisured and underinsured in our community, offering free health screening and referral services to appropriate doctors, hospitals, healthcare and social agencies.
About 75% of persons served request HIV testing. We refer those individuals to the local health department for free testing and follow up care. Most shocking is the ages of those requesting HIV testing ranging from 17 years to 50 plus years.
In my experience the approach that is most successful is based on the non-judgemental model Jesus Christ used during His earthly ministry. I begin by telling them how beautiful / handsome they are and how much we are loved by Jesus Christ that he paid the death penalty for their sins and mine.
I continue by telling them that their body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit of God, and teach them real life empowerment tools to make better life style choices, daily.
Finally, I help them understand their untapped potential and how important they are to the community because God has placed special gifts within them that would benefit them, their families and the community.
We as Seventh Day Adventsit christians need to prayerfully renew our own minds by the power of the Holy Spirit before we can effectivly minister to those infected with HIV/AIDS and their families. It is important that re-aquaint ourselves with the methods our beloved Jesus used to first meet the needs of these dear souls so that we could ultimately win them for the Kingdom of God.
Remember: "People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." God bless you all.
